Pressed leaves are one of those timeless projects that feel equal parts nostalgic and elevated. With just a few colorful finds from a walk through your neighborhood or favorite park, you can create framed artwork that looks right at home on a gallery wall, bookshelf, or entryway table. Better yet, it’s the kind of project the whole family can enjoy together.
Start with a leaf hunt
A walk through your neighborhood, a local trail, or your favorite Michigan park is all it takes to gather your supplies. Look for leaves that are freshly fallen or still attached to low branches. The best ones are relatively flat, dry, and free of large tears or brown spots.
Maples, oaks, aspens, and sweetgums all press beautifully, and collecting a variety of shapes and colors will give you more options when it’s time to arrange your artwork.
Press them flat
Once you’re home, gently brush away any dirt or moisture. Place each leaf between two sheets of parchment paper, then tuck them inside the pages of a heavy book. Add a few more books on top for extra weight and let them sit undisturbed for about one to two weeks.
The waiting is the hardest part, but it gives the leaves time to dry while keeping their beautiful shape.
