Still working from home? You’re not alone – more than a third of Americans are doing the same. If you’re feeling a little boxed in by your indoor setup, take advantage of the nice weather to take your work outside! An outdoor office can give you a fresh perspective, a little sunshine, and that elusive work-life balance we’re all chasing.
Here’s how to set up a space that works as hard as you do:
1. Start with some shade
Sunshine is great but not when it’s glaring off your laptop screen or overheating your tech. A simple canopy, patio umbrella, or even a shady spot under a tree can make a huge difference in keeping things cool and comfortable. A sail shade is an easy and inexpensive option, and as a bonus, it makes a modern statement in your yard!
2. Find a sturdy, spacious surface
Your dining chair and side table probably won’t cut it. Look for a stable desk or outdoor table with enough space for your laptop, coffee, and whatever else you need to get through your workday. Don’t forget a side table or desk-height surface for daily work extras.
3. Power up
Make sure your outdoor setup includes access to power, whether that’s a nearby outlet, a long extension cord, or a portable charger. A good wifi signal is also a must. If your backyard internet is spotty, consider a Wi-Fi extender to boost your connection. That way, you can Zoom from the garden without freezing mid-sentence.
4. Keep comfort in mind
Choose seating that supports you for the long haul – think padded cushions, adjustable heights, or even a comfy outdoor lounge chair if you’re mostly typing or reading. Your seating should support both your body and your workflow. A small fan or citronella candle can also keep bugs at bay. Want to make your own? Check this out!
5. Add a Little Zen
Plants, fresh air, and the gentle sounds of nature can help reduce stress and spark creativity. Add potted greenery, a small fountain, or wind chimes for a calming touch. Add some string lights or a lantern to keep things cozy for late-afternoon emails.
6. Make it yours
Add a few personal touches to boost your mood—potted plants, a Bluetooth speaker, maybe even an outdoor rug to define your “office.” The more inviting it feels, the more likely you are to actually use it.
With just a few tweaks, your backyard, balcony, or patio can become your favorite new workspace. Fresh air + productivity? Yes, please.
