No one likes a power outage. Especially since power outages can happen unexpectedly and can last for an often unpredictable amount of time. Therefore, It is important to be prepared in case of a power outage to ensure the safety and well-being of yourself and your family.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for a power outage:

Create an emergency kit
Have a kit ready that includes essentials such as:

  • Basic first-aid kit
  • Batteries
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Car charger for charging cell phones
  • Cash
  • Flashlights (one for each family member)
  • Garbage bags for sanitation
  • Hand sanitizer, baby wipes, and dry shampoo
  • Tool kit

Make sure to also include enough water and non-perishable food to last for several days. As well as be sure to store your kit in a dry place at normal room temperature. And don’t forget to label your kit and store it in a place where it’s easy to find, too! It may sound intense, but you’ll be appreciative of your preparedness in the unfortunate instance you need it!

Have a backup power source
Consider investing in a generator or battery backup system for your home. This will allow you to continue using essential appliances and electronics during a power outage, and will make all the difference in your general well-being.

Most portable generators run on gasoline or propane, so you also need to be sure to have the proper fuel on hand. Also make sure to store it in a safe, well-ventilated place away from the house. Remember, the exhaust from a gas generator is toxic, so only run it at least 15 feet away from your home.

Have a plan for communication
In case of a power outage, it could be difficult to communicate with loved ones. Make sure to have a plan in place for how you will communicate with family and friends during an emergency.

This includes making sure you keep your phone charged so that you can stay in touch, and have a way to call for help if needed. Yes, you may need to limit your scrolling to do so, but prioritizing your safety by doing so is inevitably worth it.

Prepare for cold temperatures
Especially in the winter, it’s imperative to prepare for cold temps when the power goes out. You can do this by:

  • Using safety candles – If you plan on using candles during a power outage, make sure to place them in a safe location, away from flammable materials. Always keep an eye on candles (be sure to not fall asleep with them on!) and never leave them unattended.
  • Having blankets – Blankets will support you in keeping warm. Better yet, having sleeping bags for each one of your family members will trap body heat and support and more comfortable sleep.
  • Preparing firewood – If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace or wood stove, making sure you have enough firewood on hand will ensure your home is staying heated.

By following these tips, you can be better prepared for a power outage and ensure the safety and well-being of yourself and your family. Remember to always stay informed about potential power outages in your area and to follow any instructions provided by your local utility company.
