How To Do A “Home Reset” This Winter

Winter is the time of year to settle in and take good care of yourself, your family, and your home. Just as it feels good for each of us to reflect and reset in order to prepare for the year ahead, doing so for your home does the same good for its longevity, as well.

Ready to do a “home reset?” Here are four steps to get started today.

Drain Hot Water Heaters

While cold showers are all the rage on the health circuit, you definitely don’t want to experience an unexpected one! Support your hot water heater by draining it and refilling it. This will reduce sediment build up – a common problem for water heaters.

Prepare The Snowblower

As major snowfalls make their way onto the weather radar, you won’t want to be left in the position of having a snowblower out of order. Avoid frustration and shoveling many feet of snow, by checking spark plugs, changing the oil and ensuring the machine works efficiently, so you can safely (and quickly!) clear your walkways.

Clear The Chimney

Avoid all fire hazards by properly maintaining your chimney before kicking on your fireplace all winter long. You will need a professional for this one! Call over a chimney sweep to take care of any debris to keep you and your family safe.

Install Winter Stripping

A drafty home only leads to discomfort and spending unnecessary money. Solve both problems by installing or replacing stripping for exterior doors, so your precious heat doesn’t leak out – especially during the extra-frigid days. Also place a few door draft stoppers on interior doors, such as those leading to the basement or garage.

Consider Lighting.

While you’re tackling the other reset items, consider the lighting in your home, too. Lighting helps to “reset” your body’s internal clock. Swap harsh white lighting with bulbs that have a warmer glow. Add more lamps to rooms that you tend to wind down in, such as the living room, bedrooms and bathrooms. Steer clear of turning on overhead lights after 8pm, so you can fully reset before bedtime. Check out this past article for more tips to promote better sleep at home.

What else will you include in your “home reset?” We hope these tips help to not only improve your home environment, but also prevent stress for you, too.
